The Many Benefits of Shared Housing

According to recent figures, the number of new people living in shared houses has rocketed. One report published by spareroom.com, states it rose a staggering 92% from 2010 to 2015 – from 396,262 in 2010, to 760,574 in 2016 – and is continuing to rise. Attitudes and circumstances have shifted and young professionals in their 20s and 30s are reaping the benefits of communal living. Here we celebrate the pros of the modern house share.

The One with Chandler’s Work Laugh

We are, of course, referring to Friends. Some of the greatest friendships have been forged over kitchen tables, breakfast cuppas in hands. Where would Monica and Rachel be, without their early morning debriefs? Or Jude Law and Ewan McGregor without their evening sofa chats (yup, they shared a place in Primrose Hill in their 20s, along with Jonny Lee Miller). All of our rooms are private, with separate shower rooms in addition to a family sized bathroom – so you have your personal space –  but shared living rooms and kitchens mean you have plenty of opportunities to chat, at the times that are right to you. Need a second opinion on your ASOS splurge? Or a buddy to binge watch Bake Off with? All our tenants are young professionals; think New Girl over The Young Ones! Communal living can be a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, via shared meals or even just a “hello / goodbye / have a good day” on your way to work. The little interactions that make a big difference.

Explorer-Seeker-Wanderer

Perhaps work means you move location regularly, or you are an adventurous spirit who plans to live abroad. Whatever your reasons, you may prefer to be geographically mobile. You might not want to be tied down to a mortgage or a long lease. If this sounds familiar, then a house share could be perfect for you. The security of a peaceful, safe home … with the possibility of packing up and moving on when the time is right for you. Ramsgate Rooms will even consider short term lets (2 months minimum), for those who really need to stay portable. It’s all about flexibility.

Show Me the Money!

The initial attraction of sharing for many is financial. In addition to all the other benefits of shared living, it is significantly cheaper than living alone. Not only in terms of rent, but also bills, which really can add up. At Ramsgate Rooms, we include all facilities in our monthly bill – even weekly cleaners! This means you have peace of mind when it comes to your outgoings. No unexpected gas bill, no awkward who-is-paying-what conversations, just transparent, easy to manage monthly costs. All our houses are also fully furnished, including the standard (bed, chest of drawers, wardrobe, desk) and the not-so-standard (kettle, toaster, microwave, TV, washing machine, vacuum, iron and an ironing board, laundry bag, reading lamp … when we say furnished, we mean furnished!). This might mean that you have the potential to put some of your hard earned wages aside.  Are you saving for something big? A deposit to buy a flat perhaps? Ramsgate Rooms could be just right for you, as you save to get your foot on the ladder.
